He was also a medical technician and took care of patients as needed. He drove an ambulance transporting patients and wounded in the combat zone. He received wounds as a result of enemy action and on November 12, 1944, in France received a Purple Heart. He also received a WWII Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and four Bronze Stars.
