Evelyn was born in Norfolk Virginia, August 4, 1946, to Albert and Dorothy Powers. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, David Powers. Her memory will be cherished by her surviving family, Alexander Stumpf of Rapidan Virginia; her sisters, Catherine Powers and husband, Valle of Los Angeles, Margaret "Peggy" Bryant of Virginia Beach, and Alice Powers of Richmond; and her brother, Albert Powers of Virginia Beach. Evelyn is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Evelyn graduated from James Madison University, then earned her masters and doctorate from the University of Virginia. She was a faculty member at the University for several years and then taught at Lycoming College in Pennsylvania, and later as a professor at East Carolina University. She retired to her dearly loved family farm in Rapidan. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the World Wildlife Fund.
