John Dewey Wofford Jr.

Mr. John Dewey Wofford, Jr., age 77, a resident of Dothan passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2014.

His life began on May 24th, 1936 in Chattoggo County, GA. Born to the late Minnie Mae and John Wofford, along with his siblings Daris June 15, 1934, Frances Mae June 25, 1940, Robin Lee October 14, 1943, Sammy Hugh July 30, 1949 and George Michel who passed away the day of his birth on July 15, 1951.

He was then wed to the love of his life Ruth Ann Davis on November 9, 1956 at the age of 20, in a small town of Troy, Missouri. Together they raised 7 children, James Dewey, Tammie Francine, John Franklin, William Raymond, Patricia Ann, Robin Michelle, and Tina Marie Antoinette.

He was skilled in many trades and had many talents all on a second grade education. Some of which included Starks Brothers Nursery, family and local farming, an avid mechanic at ray Thompsons Auto and Wofford's Auto Repair, a master craftsmen of construction; not only for his wife Ruthann's Craft Store "Ruth's Home Delights" but the workmanship of building anything from the ground up, he also ran a family service station along with many more jobs throughout the many years of his life.

One interesting story that characterized this wonderful man is the story behind the loss of his right eye. On Tuesday, May 30, 1961 the day after they brought their newborn son William home from the hospital he went back to work with Preferred Homes building modular homes that day. A few hours after being on the job sight, him along with some other co-workers were building trusses in the home, he started hammering studs up for framing when a nail hit a knot in the wood then ricocheted into his eye socket. They tried saving it but the infection had already set in by that Friday causing him to lose his eye. With the loss of his eye it did not slow him down nor hold him back from doing what he loved, working with his hands.

In the years after retirement he has stayed busy at home with his family and his Chihuahua companion Chico; traveling to visit extended family as much as he could, along with a passion for gardening in his own garden. However, most importantly he enjoyed spending his time with his 7 children, 36 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. For most of us this would seem to be more overwhelming than anything, but for him it is who he is; a real family man. He was someone who helps others in need and will give his shirt off his back for you, if you needed it. For is he hung the stars, for others he was their stars.

Funeral services for Mr. Wofford will be held Friday, January 17, 2014 at 2 P.M. from the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend David Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill City Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. Family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service, Friday, January 17, 2014 from 1 to 2 P.M.
