"WYNANTSKILL WATER POWER
"Down to the year 1809 was occupied exclusively by Merritt & Hart's grist mill and Defreest's carding machine. During this year two water power leases were obtained, one of Mr. Van Rensselaer for the upper succession of falls, amounting to about seventy-two feet, by John Converse of Troy and six others, who proceeded to erect and run at the upper fall, a small establishment, as a rolling and slitting mill for the turning of Swedish bars into nail plates and spikes and horse nail rods. In 1812 the establishment was incorporated as 'The Troy Iron and Nail Factory,' with a capital of $96,000, the stock being distributed in shares of $6,000 each. The works which down to 1821 were conducted under the superintendence of Mr. Converse, embraced down to the time he was succeeded by Mr. Henry Burden, but a single pair of rollers coupled to two water-wheels, one at each end, and connected with them as if upon a shaft, thus causing the revolutions of the rolls to be very slow, the same as that of the wheels, certainly very languid when compared with the movements of the rolls through which the hissing iron is sent to the mills now run by the same, but greatly improved, water power."
