The first child of Henry Race and Frances (Gunn) Race, Captain Race was born on shipboard while his parents were on their way from their native Australia to Victoria, B. C., Canada. By 1856 the family was in Kitsap County, Washington, and in 1976 they settled on Whidbey Island.

He was the brother of Tasman, Austral Lewis, Francis Puget, William Hobart and Ronald James Race and the stepfather of Lamar Cline and Nola Howard.

He owned and captained several Puget Sound steamboats and turned to farming when he retired from the sea.
