He married Catharine lnu. and fathered Joshua (b. @1851), William (b. @1856), Clayton (b. 1860), Monroe (b. @1862), and Frank (b. @1867). In 1860, he was a laborer living in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Marietta August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 135th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 24, 1863, although he was home on sick furlough at the time. At muster-out, the army docked his final pay for loss of his knapsack and canteen. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster September 24. 1864, as a private with Co. G, 199th Pennsylvania Infantry, joining for duty December 1, and honorably discharged with his company June 28, 1865.
