Roman Catholic Bishop. He joined the Catholic Church at the age of six years not long after his father died in the 1918 influenza pandemic. After high school he worked for an oil company during the Great Depression. From his childhood home in Baltimore, Maryland he attended seminary on scholarship in Emmittsburg, Maryland and was ordained priest on June 12, 1947 for the diocese of Washington DC. Following service as chancellor and pastor, he was consecrated Bishop on April 26, 1966 and made Auxiliary Bishop for Washington DC. Thereafter he was vicar general for the archdiocese. He served as chancellor for seven more years before his appointment as the ninth Bishop of Columbus, Ohio. His hallmarks included outreach programs such as spirituality development, Operation Feed, and community housing initiatives. After a decade of work in Columbus he retired on September 18, 1982 as Bishop Emeritus of Columbus, and remained active in administration, serving as chaplain for the St Ann Infant and Maternity Home. He died at the Saint Raphael nursing care facility following a stroke at his residence.
