Henry Race came to California in 1849, the time of the gold rush. He returned to Australia, married Frances Gunn, then came with her to Victoria, B. C. In 1856 they relocated to Kitsap County, Washington where they lived for about twenty years. He worked as a bookkeeper during this time. Their next home was on Whidbey Island where they both lived the rest of their lives.

Their first child, Captain Henry Melbourne Race, was born at sea on the voyage to Victoria. Their other children, all born at Port Gamble in Kitsap County, were Tasman, Austral Lewis, Francis Puget, William Hobart and Ronald James Race.
