John was the son of Joseph Lawhead and Cassandra V Harding who were originally from Pennsylvania and Maryland, respectively. They were married in Belmont county, Ohio. The family later Moved to Indiana and lived in Greene county and then Knox County, in Edwardsport. John was married to Elizabeth A Abrams on Sept. 2 , 1866 in Greene county, Indiana. They had 8 children together.

Elizabeth (Abrams) Lawhead died on 28 Aug 1880 shortly followed by her twin sons.

On January 2nd 1881, John lawhead married Sarah Carrie Underwood, and they had one child;

John then married margaret Sarah Walker 26 Mar 1889 and they had 2 children;

They were divorced and then John married Mrs. Dora E. "Nettie" Lay on 11 Nov 1894. She died a year after John.

John Lawhead; lot 170 Edwardsport IN Was one of the oldest houses in Edwards port IN. He was also a veteran of the Civil War; 1861-1865. His house was vacated years ago and torn down. Later given by Elsie Moran, his grand-daughter to the Baptist Church for a parking lot. Other children of William Lawhead signed the deed to Elsie and ErvinMoran .

Organized at Indianapolis, Ind., and mustered in March 13, 1865. Left State for Harper's Ferry, W. Va., March 16. Attached to 1st Brigade, 3rd Provisional Division, Army of the Shenandoah, and guard duty
at Charleston, Stevenson's Station and Summit Point, Berryville, Harper's Ferry and Maryland Heights till August. Mustered out August 4, 1865.
