Frank L. Van Alstine, 92, of 701 Grand St. died Thursday (March 10, 1994) at Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 10, 1902, in Arapaho, Okla., to Frank and Elnora Kiser Van Alstine. Frank earned his bachelor of science degree from Southwestern State College, Weatherford, Okla., in 1929; his master's degree in 1936 from Oklahoma A&M; and his doctorate in 1941 from the University of Minnesota. He was an associate professor of education at the University of Tennessee, and was the superintendent of the experimental school in Norris, Tenn. While working on his doctorate, he was principal of the University Demonstration School, Groveland, Wayzata, Minn., from 1941-1943. He then became principal of the Cumberland Junior High at Whitefish Bay, Wis., from 1944 to 1955. In 1956, he accepted the position of graduate dean at Winona State University and served there until his retirement in 1972. Dr. Van Alstine is highly respected by his former students, who completed their master's degree under his supervision.

He will always be remembered for his quiet, gentle manner and as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church; member of Phi Delta Pi; he was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Winona for over 40 years; a life member of the National Education Association and the Minnesota Education Association. He enjoyed chess, pool, checkers and reading.

On Feb. 27, 1948, he married Gladys L. Kortens at Milwaukee, Wis.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys, of Winona; sons, Frank (Darlene) Van Alstine, Jr. of Burnsville, Minn., and James B. (Sharon) Van Alstine of Morris, Minn.; daughters, Margaret (Philip) Ardon of Dundee, Fla., Jane (Steven) Einhorn of Roselle, Ill. and Jill (Steven) Henry of Phoenix, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 brothers and sisters.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Winona; the Rev. Thomas Winkler officiating. Interment of his remains will be in St. Paul's Memorial Garden.

Honorary casketbearers will be Dillard Sobeck, Richard Hansz, David Rislove, Richard Harding, Richard Darby and Richard Koliofski.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the Winona State University Foundation.
