Janice Louise Parcell Amburgey passed away peacefully from kidney and vascular disease on January 12, 2014 surrounded by her family and close friends.

Those who knew Janice describe her as a wonderful friend, great woman who was caring, loving, strong and passionate about her family.

She absolutely loved fresh tomatoes, preferably those picked from her son's garden (they always tasted better), Pepsi, Olive Garden's chicken scampi (and heaven forbid we forget the extra side of sauce) homemade mac and cheese, crème brulee and was known across the United States for her sweet tea. Family dinners cooked by her were the highlight of her life. She adored and looked forward every year to cooking a huge breakfast for her son's shift at the South Charleston Police Department with homemade waffles as her specialty.

She quilted the most amazing quilts and purses which she refused to sell but gifted to everyone she loved; she loved to can, and sat on her porch for hours watching the baby birds hatch and grow in their nest on her porch.

She lived life full of laughter, jokes, flipping off those she cared for, popped bubbles on bubble wrap to distress, hiking and traveling with her lifelong friend Alice, snuggled with her rescue cat, enjoyed the occasional margarita on the rocks with a sidecar and playing games with the grandkids and great grandkids. She always wanted to go to Quebec City and shared lifetime dream of the trip with her daughter. Seeing her greet you at her door with a huge warm smile wrapped in her robe will be forever cherished.

She taught her children that stray animals deserved a home (even if they were a pregnant praying mantis who delivered her zillion babies which dispersed all over the house, ducks and guinea pigs to say a few), that all people deserve a chance(s), how to do Chinese Fire Drills on very busy roads, to call when we got home.

Janice nurtured the children at Nitro Junior High as the school secretary, was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, and was a strong force in the belief and growth of FamilyCare Health Centers.

She is forever missed by her cat, Toast; her son, Eddie Amburgey, who was always her favorite, and his wife, Sandy, known as her favorite daughter in law; granddaughters, Alexa and Jocelyn; her daughter, Debi Amburgey Ellis, who was her Dad's favorite and quickly catching up to being her mom's, and her husband, Mark Ellis, known as the FSIL; their children, Meghan Sorey Parsons (great grandsons, Austin and Trent), Ashley Ellis, Tyler Ellis, Whitney Tharp (great-grandsons, Hayden and Ryder), and Drew Ellis and his wife, Wendy (grandson, Garrison); brother, Bobby Parcell; sister, Brenda Fernatt; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Many thanks and appreciation to mom's neighbors who watched out for and cared to visit and help, and to her amazing support and friendship with Fran Coleman and JD Simpson.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday, January 15 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, January 16 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.
