Adolph or "Captain Dan" as he was known became a true success story as a Norwegian immigrant coming to the United States when he was only 15 years old. He arrived with his widowed mother and siblings and they found their way to Seattle and then settled in Dockton, Washington. Adolph learned salmon fishing, English and eventually became a prominent sea captain in the Merchant Marines for all his adult life. Although much of his life was spent at sea he had a beloved wife and two daughters at home. He so loved his five grandchildren that he would quietly cry with gratitude at Thanksgiving dinners. He was very beloved by all. Large and handsome in stature, he was boisterous yet gentle. He penned a long hand-written book of his life at sea and a journal from World War II that was typed out (word processed) by me; his grand-daughter and it remains a treasure in family safe-keeping. Adolph and Grace moved a total of 14 times during their marriage as Adolph wanted a "new start" every time he came home to land again!
