Born in Pennsylvania, he had a second enlistment on March 15, 1876, at age 33, at Fort Rice, North Dakota. During the Battle of the Little Big Horn, he was a part of Major Reno's Battalion, and fought in the valley and in the hilltop. He reenlisted again, on March 15, 1881, at Fort Meade, South Dakota, as a Farrier (man who shoes horses and also treats them for illnesses). According to his military records, he had blue eyes, brown hair, a florid complexion, was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and was illiterate.
