His work during World War I brought him the following decorations; Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster, the French Legion of Honor, the Order of Leopold II (Belgium), and the Croix de Guerre from three countries, France, Belgium and Luxemborg.

In World War II he was on active duty as a colonel on the General Staff Corps from February 1941 to January 1947.

His first marriage to Barbara Look took place in Florence, MA in 1918 ended in divorce in 1932.

He then married Elizabeth Allen Smith vonNardroff on June 11, 1938 in Englewood, New Jersey.
