Oscar Bliss Dix, 73, died suddenly at his home at 5 Pleasant Street Sunday morning. He had been out shoveling his walk between ? and ? o'clock, and soon after going into the house was stricken with heart failure.

Mr. Dix was a native of Whitingham, Vt., son of Wilbur and Sarah Bliss Dix and received his education in the district schools and in the old Whitingham academy. Mr. Dix was employed in Worcester when a young man, and remained in that city until he enlisted in the Civil War in the 4th Massachusetts cavalry. After serving three years he returned to Whitingham in broken health. He engaged in farming and soon after the close of the was married to Miss Addie Stetson of Whitingham. He carried on a farm at East Whitingham and later went to Worcester, remaining there for a number of years. Later he went to Halifax, Vt. and engaged in farming. He came to Greenfield about 18 years ago and for a short time lived on Meadow Road. Since then he had lived at 5 Pleasant Street.

Mr. Dix was for two years commander of Edwin E. Day Post, G. A. R., and was its chaplain at the time of his death. He had often been a (line unreadable) been regularly called upon to take part in the Memorial day exercises in the public schools.

(Line unreadable) and social arrangements and was well liked and greatly respected in the various communities in which he had lived. Mr. and Mrs. Dix had no children, but brought up several children in their home. Besides his widow he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Emma Barber and Mrs. Elsie Snyder both of Halifax, Vt.

Mr. Dix was an honorary member of the National Dames of the Civil War and the order was represented at the funeral.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon, Rev. Charles W. Merriam, officiating, assisted by Commander Saxton and Chaplin Parsons of Edwin E. Day Post. Members of the G. A. R. and other patriotic societies attended. The body was placed in the tomb and later will be interred at Green River cemetery.
