Two people die after crashing in Illinois ditch filled with water
CLINTON COUNTY • Two people driving home from a night out at the movies died early Sunday after their truck hit an icy patch and overturned into a ditch filled with water, authorities say.
Clinton County Coroner Phil Moss identified the victims as Christopher Harper, 20, of St. Rose, and Josie Walker, 18, of Damiansville.
Moss said Harper was a 2012 graduate of Central Community High School in Breese; Walker was a senior at the same school.
Moss said Harper was driving a truck east on Airport Road, south of Damiansville. The road is in a low-lying area near farm fields and had some ice and water on it from an overflowing ditch nearby.
"When they hit the ice, the driver either hydroplaned or lost control," Moss said.
The vehicle overturned in a ditch that was about 3 feet deep. "The water was actually overflowing over the road, it was higher than the ditch," Moss said.
A man saw the wreckage and called the sheriff's department at about 1:45 a.m. Sunday. It wasn't clear when the mid-sized truck crashed. The man had been down that same stretch of road about an hour earlier and hadn't seen anything.
Rescuers pulled them from the truck and took them to St. Joseph Hospital in Breese. Harper died at 4:08 a.m. and Walker died at 4:12 a.m.
Moss said Harper and Walker had been to a late movie in the O'Fallon area and were heading home when they crashed.
Both victims were wearing seatbelts.
The school district declined to provide any information on either student.
