Obituary, Pocono Record, Friday, Feb. 8, 2013
Cynthia Kane Bender, 77, of Pocono Pines died Thursday, Jan. 31, of complications from chemotherapy for colon cancer at the Geisinger Wyoming Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre.
She was a vacation resident of Lake Naomi in Pocono Pines for nearly 40 years and was a full-time resident for the past three years.
Cynthia was an avid golfer and tennis player. She will be remembered for her endless energy, enthusiasm, sense of humor, love for life, and the selfless giving of herself to others. She made the community a better place. On her refrigerator, was a 3-by-5-inch card on which she had written "You have never really lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you."
As one person said about her, "She brought sunshine into a dark room, love to people who felt ignored, and a spirit of "let's get it done" to people who needed a boost. She will remain a spirit of support and guidance to me, wherever I go."
Cynthia was a longtime resident of Swarthmore, where she was active in Swarthmore Presbyterian Church serving multiple terms as an elder and a deacon. She sang in the choir and was a Stephen minister. She was active in the community serving on the boards of the Swarthmore Swim Club and Swarthmore Recreational Association.
Born on Aug. 17, 1935, Cynthia was the daughter of Rosamond and Gibbs Kane of West Chester. She was a graduate of Wilmington (Delaware) Friends School and Lasell College, and attended Tufts University and the University of Iowa.
Cynthia is survived by her husband, Douglas, four children, Kane of West Chester, Jeffrey of Atlanta, Ga., Jonathan of Lake Mary, Fla., and Kimberly of Ivyland, Bucks County; four grandchildren, John, Forrest, Leighton and Ali; and a sister, Meredith Tolsdorf of West Chester.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church. A second memorial service will be held on June 14 at the Salem United Church of Christ.
In lieu of flowers, her friends in the Poconos may make donations in her memory to the Salem United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 1047, Pocono Pines, PA 18350. For others, Cynthia requested that donations in her name be made to the PEO's Cottey College, c/o PEO Chapter P, 419 Riverview Road, Swarthmore, PA 19081, with the donations to be used to create a fund in her name; or the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church, 727 Harvard Ave., Swarthmore, PA 19081.
