He was the son of Henry and Cassie Goff. When his mother died, he was sent to live with his Uncle William in Delavan. Alton attended school in Delavan and worked on a farm. During this time, he enlisted in the Wisconsin National Guard. He was a member of Company A, 192nd Tank Battalion US Army known as "The Janesville 99". His unit was sent to the Philippines where they were held as prisoners of war from April 1942. He participated in the Bataan Death March. He died from dysentery and malaria in the prison camp. His remains were returned to the USA for burial after the war.
