Civil War Union Army Officer. He served in the 29th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, rising from Sergeant Major or Major. He was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war".

He later rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Pennsylvania National Guard.

He was an original member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, with his number being #000073.
