"John W. Burgess, b. Baltimore 6 May 1849, engaged in business with his father and continued there until 1882 when he came to Hockessin, DE and purchased a tract on which there was a large deposit of kaolin. He constructed a plant for the working of the clay and employed more than 40 men.
John W. married in East Orange, NJ Eliza A.- d/o Jonathan Hedden. She was born in East Orange. Of their ten children, the following are living (1899): Marion, John, Lillian, Helen S., Marjorie, and Donald. Members of the Presbyterian church."
