DUVALL, James Arthur son of David and Nancy Duvall
The Freeholder, Cornwall, ON - 21 April 1927

James Arthur Duvall This village on Sunday, April 3, 1927, lost one of its most venerable and respected citizens in the person of James Arthur Duvall. The late Mr. Duvall was born in Lunenburg on May 12, 1837, being in his 90th year at the time of his death. He had resided here for the past 53 years.

He leaves to mourn his loss his widow, one son and two daughters, - Frank N. Duvall, Chelsea, Quebec; J. W. Duvall, Newington; and Mrs. A. C. Jardine, Newington, and also one sister, Margaret Ann Duvall, Newington.

Mr. Duvall was married at Thorold, Ontario on October 11, 1870 to Amelia C. Secord, the ceremony being performed by Rev. M. Armstrong. For a short time he lived at Dunville, Ontario, and a little over 50 years ago he and his wife moved to this village, which has since been their home.

Here he was engaged in the lumbering and saw mill business, and of late years was engaged in the manufacture of cheese boxes. Mr. & Mrs. Duvall were among the pioneers of Newington, there being only three or four houses here when they came, and no churches or school.

Deceased was most energetic, not only in his business, but in the promotion of the religious and educational needs of the community and was one of the first members of the local Methodist Church. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a good Neighbor, and behind every move which had for its object the betterment of the community.

In his religious duties he was most attentive, being regular at the Sunday and mid-week services, and Sunday School, while he was a strong worker for the cause of temperance. On the occasion of his 83rd birthday, he was presented with a handsome cane by his employees.

Although he had been in failing health for a number of years, he suffered little, if any, pain and never murmured nor complained and met trouble or joy with a calm, peaceful smile and, as his former Pastor said, "his going was just a passing over".

For many years, Mr. Duvall held the position of Magistrate. His manner was ever kind, and no one ever heard him use a vile or profane word. His life in the community was one long chapter of cleanliness, sobriety, ambition and Godliness.

The funeral took place on April 5, 1927, from his late residence to the Methodist United Church and Hillcrest Cemetery here and was very largely attended. The service was conducted by Rev. George Wood of Chelsea, a former pastor, Rev. G. F. Duncan, resident pastor, and Rev. A. Bishop, of Escott, a former pastor.

The pallbearers were Barney Rombough, Asaph Hawn, Walter Reddick, Cecil Paupst, Colborne Thompson, and Harold Thompson, employees of J. Duvall and Son.

Among relatives present from a distance were: Mrs. T. Hanes, Jordan, Ontario; Mrs. C. L. McGill, Mountain; Mrs. W. H. Secord and son Frank, of Toronto; T. S. Gillis, Leslie Foster and Mr. & Mrs. Jack Beamish, Ottawa; Mrs. W. Daye, Ottawa; Oscar Pearce and Norman Beach, Winchester.
