Daphne Alma Johnson was born August 5, 1926, to Harry and Katherine Aylesbury in Colchester, Essex, England, 50 miles northeast of London, where she was raised and educated. Under the British system, at age 14 her schooling had been completed and she went to work in a dry cleaning factory pressing military uniforms.
On May 6, 1944, Daphne was united in marriage with Herbert LeRoy Johnson in Colchester, England, while he was serving in Europe with the Army Air Corp.
U.S. soldiers had to travel home with their units, so in 1946, Daphne and their first born son, Brian, sailed for America on the Queen Mary. Three more sons joined the family and they made their home inEagle Grove.
Daphne enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
She was an active member of Evangelical Lutheran Church and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.
Daphne passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at Rotary Senior Living in Eagle Grove, at the age of 86 years.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1992; son, Timothy, in 1994; sister, Joyce Waylen; brother, Buddy Aylesbury; granddaughter, Amy Johnson; great grandson, Lucas Toillion; and great granddaughter, Elliana.
Survivors include her children, Brian Johnson (Joan) of Marshalltown, Michael Johnson (Fran) of Baraboo, Wis., and Thomas Johnson (Ann) of Decatur, Ill., and Charlotte Cleveland of Marshalltown, eleven grandchildren Teresa Knop (Dayid), Nathan Johnson (Jess), Dean Johnson, Pawn Paul (Jeff), Dan Johnson, Derek Johnson, Chris Johnson, Angela Johnson, Anita Johnson, Anthony Johnson, and Andrew Johnson; and 24 great-grandchildren: Michael, Morgan, Adalyn, Alivia, Emelia, Madison, Evan, Rookie, Scott, Cannon, Easton, Natasha, Logan, Jagger, Andrea, Dominick, Kayla, Kaitlyn, Kolten, Kayden, Trenton, Torance, Trinity, and Trevor; and a great-great granddaughter, Charlotte Rose.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, at Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial was held in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
Foust Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
