Early Life: Nettie Marie Peterson Cranney was born August 25, 1918, youngest child of Peter Powell Peterson and Hazel Smart Parkinson Peterson. Born of pioneer ancestry, her grandfather, Peter B. Peterson, at age 18, was a member of one of the last Mormon handcart companies; the company was known for their enthusiastic singers. Her father, well-known for his fine tenor voice, died when Marian was just six years old. Her family believes she often heard him singing, helping her develop her singing gift from an early age. Marian's mother, Hazel, also a descendant of pioneers, was a spiritual mentor to her, raising four children and overcoming tremendous challenges while maintaining an optimistic outlook and strong faith.
Education: Utah State University
Life's Work/Service/Interests: Marian brought the gift of music and singing to her family's lives; to sing of the joys and beauty of life. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, with a minor in music. She married Wyndon Doyle "Dick" Cranney in Washington, D.C. Full of life and joy, Marian immediately began using her rich talents to make a wonderful home for the six children that came. Marian was diligent in teaching her children to say prayers at bedtime. They remember with fondness, the many times she played the piano after tucking them in. When they hear Clair de Lune by Debussy or Sonatina by Kabelevsky, they think of those nights when she played on her beautiful grand piano, one of her prize possessions, on which she played Debussy just this last Thanksgiving. In the 1960s and 70s she also enjoyed singing alto in the Ralph Woodward Chorale. She loved the outdoors, hunting game or petrified wood, running rapids, and time at Lake Powell; golf was also a pastime. She was very good to her siblings, she took the time to visit and take Kirma, her sister, for drives around town and up the canyon during Kirma's final years. She also made many a trip to Boise, Idaho, to comfort and talk to Ottis before and, especially after, his blindness set in. When she was able to drive she was always checking in on her children, thrilled at seeing their accomplishments, both in their youth and in their homes and careers. Nettie Marie Peterson Cranney passed away on January 11, 2014. She was 95.
