Jerry was the son of Jerry M. Wooten and Anna B. "Annie" Wimpleberg. The family lived on a farm in Carmi, Illinois where Jerry L. grew up helping his father with corn and wheat crops.

At the age of 20, Jerry L. joined the CCC, or Civilian Conservation Corps, during the Great Depression. As a corps member, he worked on building projects in Oregon and California for the United States government. He and fellow CCC members were recognized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for their efforts in fighting forest fires in California.

Jerry married Ella Pearl Frymire on 24 Nov 1934 in Emma, White County, Illinois. They were the parents of 3 children.

The Wootens moved to Wood River, Madison County, Illinois in the early 1930's. Jerry took a job with the Shell Oil refinery located in Roxana, Illinois. He working in the compounding department at Shell. He retired in 1978 following 46 years of service.

Jerry was known for his unusual memory and ability to remember details from events that happened from early in his life. He fascinated friends, co-workers and family members with stories from his life including times spent growing up on the family farm.

At the time of his death at VIP Manor, Jerry was 90 years, 3 months and 26 days old. He was survived by his wife of 68 years, Ella Wooten; 1 son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Marge Wooten of Wood River, Illinois; 2 daughters, Wanda Ringering of Wood River, and Carolyn LaTempt of East Alton; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Albert Wooten of Carmi, Illinois, and Leslie Wooten of Decatur, Illinois; and 1 sister, Pearl Rushing of Texas.

Visitation was held at Marks Mortuary in Wood River on 23 Jan 2003. The pastor of St. John United Church of Christ presided over funeral services at the funeral home at 11 a.m. the following day.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society in St. Louis, Missouri.
