BEAUFORT, S.C. - Dan Houston Spot Thompson, 87, husband of Helen McCann Rearden Thompson, of Beaufort, SC, died Tuesday, January 7, 2014 surrounded by his beloved family in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 13, 2014 from 5-7pm at Anderson Funeral Home. Masonic rites will be held at the end of visitation. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at 1:00pm in Carteret Street United Methodist Church with interment in Beaufort National Cemetery with military honors. Mr. Thompson was born on March 21, 1926 in Langley, SC. He is the son of the late William Jerome Thompson and Susie Powell Thompson. He was predeceased by his first wife Gladys Siberry Thompson and his brother Jarvis Osborne (Big Spot) Thompson. In 1993, Mr. Thompson married his high school sweetheart. They both loved to travel and enjoyed going on cruises and mountain vacations together. Mr. Thompson worked for SC Electric and Gas Company and retired after a 46 year career as a supervisor of the linemen for Beaufort County. Mr. Thompson was a member of the Beaufort Jaycees. He served as Jaycee President and was selected as Beaufort Man of the Year. He took great pride in his community service as a Jaycee and spear headed the construction of the first community baseball field in Beaufort. He served on the SC Council on Vocational & Technical education. Mr. Thompson was a lifelong amateur athlete and outdoorsman, from football and track at Langley Bath High School to softball and tennis in years in Beaufort, he enjoyed sports. As an outdoorsman, he loved his hunting and fishing. He saw sports and the outdoors as a way to spend quality time with his sons, Mike and Darren. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and attended Carteret Street United Methodist Church. He served his country in the US Navy in World War II in the Pacific Theater. Surviving in addition to his wife, Helen; are two sons, Michael (Sandy) and Darren; four grandchildren, Jessica Bridges (Mark), Tommy Torkko (Christy), Brian Torkko (Carroll), Heather Torkko. Three great grandchildren, Grayson Bridges, Britten and Dillon Torkko ,and a niece Lynn Thompson McCormack (Mike). He was Uncle Dan to all the children in his wife's family. Honorary pall bearers will be current and former employees of SCE & G. Pall bearers will be Mark Bridges, Tommy Torkko, Brian Torkko, Stewart Twilley, Chris Wilson and Drew Peters. Flowers are acceptable.
