Gerald Purcell Fitzgerald, Jr. was the son of Gerald Purcell Fitzgerald of Ireland (born 5 May 1865 and died 21 Nov 1946) and his then wife, Lida Eleanor Niccolls, daughter of John Albert Niccolls and his wife Lenora M. Thompson of Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Lenora M. Thompson was the daughter of Jasper Markle Thompson and his wife Eliza Caruthers.

There is some indication that the surname for this family Fitzgerald should actually be 'Purcell-Fitzgerald', as seen in legal documents and other locations as well.

About the Parents of Gerald Purcell Fitzgerald, Jr. ---

In 1899, Lida Eleanor Niccolls met Gerald Fitzgerald, Sr. who was a nephew of Edward Fitzgerald. His Uncle Edward was a poet who was known for his work in the translation of Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam from the Persian language into the English language.

Gerald Fitzgerald, Sr. had reportedly come to Fayette County, Pennsylvania in order to participate in the coal industry there.

Gerald Fitzgerald, Sr. and Lida were married on 1 March 1899 in Uniontown.

There were 3 children born to this union before their divorce was made final by an act of Irish Parliament in 1907---
John Purcell Fitzgerald, born 24 Sept 1899,
and twins--Gerald Purcell Fitzgerald, Jr., and
Edward Maurice Purcell Fitzgerald, born on 25 Oct 1900.
