Oakland Tribune, Tues., May 16, 1967.

Funeral services have been held for Mrs. Bertha Wysinger Allen, 81, whose parents came to California by covered wagon in 1849, both of them children of Freed Men, later to become important in both political and early civil rights matters in the state.

Mrs. Allen herself was an active member of numerous organizations, and was a member or officer of the former County Welfare League, the Young Women's Christian Association, and the Alameda County League of Colored Women Voters, formed in the 1930s to inspire more active participation in politics by Negro women and also credited with being instrumental in opening Highland Hospital to qualified Negro girl nursing students.

She was also a member of the Northern Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, which operated the Fannie Wall Home and Nursery, and was co-founder of the California Native Daughters, affiliated with the California State Association of Colored Women's Clubs.

Mrs. Allen was born in Visalia, the youngest daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Edmond Wysinger. Her father a Baptist clergyman, in 1890 instituted and won a suit for equal education for Negro, Mexican and Chinese children in California. This was the celebrated Wysinger vs. Crookshank case, in which the state Supreme Court decision blocked a Tulare County separate school policy, also prevailing in some other counties.

The family moved to Oakland in 1891, and Bertha Wysinger married the late Otis D. Allen, who was an Alameda County deputy sheriff.

Mrs. Allen had lived in her own home at 1087 66th St. until two weeks ago, when because of failing health she went to the home of her son, Ivan Allen, at 801 Calmar St. She died in her sleep last week.

Besides her son, Mrs. Allen is survived by two foster sons, Lester Matthews and James Lyles, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
