Mr. Floyd Hughes
(August 13, 1958 - October 6, 2013)

Floyd Hughes of Canton, Mississippi (Madison County), was born August 13, 1958. He was the son of the late Wesley Hughes, Sr. and Lanteen Bailey Hughes. His maternal grandparents were the late William Nollie Bailey (Madison County) and Dessie Ree Johnson of (Rankin County) Mississippi. His paternal grandparents were the late Leody Hughes (Madison County) and Fannie McGruder of (Madison County) Mississippi.

Mr. Hughes graduated from Canton High School in Canton, Mississippi and was granted an opportunity to attend the University of Southern Mississippi. In 1979, he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and began work with the State of Mississippi and then began work with United States Federal Government. His vibrant career with the Army Audit Agency took him to Elizabethtown, Kentucky and eventually, Huntsville, Alabama. In each location he easily acquired new friends, church members, fraternity brothers and an array of colleagues.

His career with AAA is noted by his responsibility to visit government offices and army bases around the country. This job requirement was something he loved, considering that most of his childhood was restrained by local travel to nearby places: Reservoir Park picnics, Sunday afternoon play at family get-togethers, daytrips to the local zoo and Sunday evening visits to grandparents. Contrastingly, as an adult, Mr. Hughes was blessed with the privilege of traveling throughout America for both business and pleasure. He enjoyed experiencing new places and meeting new people.

In 1987, he married Marcella Garrett of Piedmont, South Carolina (Greenville County), and in 1994 God brought a son into their lives, David Demarcus Hughes.

Having received Christ at an early age, his childhood Sunday mornings were filled with Sunday School and singing in the youth choir at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Canton, Mississippi. As an adult, he remained a servant of the Lord wherever he lived. He faithfully served First Baptist Church in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, where he was ordained as a deacon. Since 1998, at First Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama, he tirelessly served in the Brotherhood Chorus, the Brotherhood Organization, the Usher Ministry, the Trustee Ministry and the Jail Ministry.

In 1979, at the University of Southern Mississippi, he was initiated into the Delta Delta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He was a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the Southern Province. Upon relocating to Huntsville, he joined the Huntsville Alumni Chapter, where he passionately served five terms as Keeper of Records, and worked faithfully with Guide Right program as a Kappa League advisor. As a result of his professional background and love for the fraternity, he initiated many process improvements, and unselfishly gave of his time, talents and resources to support all the members of Kappa Alpha Psi.

Mr. Hughes will be ever remembered for his honesty, generosity, and love of family. He loved God, he loved life and he loved serving. He genuinely cared for others and he had a shepherd's heart. His servant's spirit kept him busy assisting whoever was in need and guiding whoever needed direction.

A humble leader, he was a manager who earned respect and he was a fervent advocate for accuracy, excellence and accountability.

He leaves to cherish his memories: son, David Demarcus Hughes of Madison, Alabama; friend, Marcella Garrett Hughes of Madison, Alabama; mother, Lanteen Bailey Hughes of Canton, Mississippi; sisters, Dorothy Hughes Wells and Valarie Hughes Florence of Jackson, Mississippi; brother, Wesley Hughes, Jr. of Canton, Mississippi; nieces, Danielle Wells, Gabrielle Florence and Mackenzie Florence of Jackson Mississippi, Alesha Hughes of Canton, Mississippi; nephews, Marques Wells and Lance Hughes of Jackson, Mississippi; additionally, there is a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, loving friends, co-workers, and neighbors who loved him dearly.

Funeral service will be 12:00 noon on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at the First Missionary Baptist Church (3509 Blue Spring Road, Huntsville, AL 35810) with Dr. Julius R. Scruggs officiating. Interment will be in the Valhalla Memorial Gardens. Mr. Hughes will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time.

A Visitation with family and friends will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2013, at the Royal Chapel of Memories.

Public Viewing will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2013; from 8:30 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2013; and from 8:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. on Saturday. October 12, 2013, at the Royal Funeral Home.
