Israeli Prime Minister. He served as the eleventh Prime Minister of Israel from 2001 until 2006. He was born in the Kfar Malal area in Pre-State Israel and by his mid teens, he was a member of Haganah. Sharon served as a commander of an infantry unit in the Alexandroni Brigade during the 1948 Israeli War of Independence and in 1953, he formed the "101" Special Commando Unit which controlled military operations against Palestinian Fedayeen (or militants). Sharon served as commander of the Paratroopers Brigade in 1956 and saw action in the Sinai Campaign one-year later. After serving at other various military capacities, Sharon studied Law at Tel Aviv University. He commanded an armored division during both the 1967 Six Day Way and the Yom Kippur War in 1973, prior to joining the Israeli government as a member of the Knesset. Among his appointments include Minister of Agriculture during Menachem Begin's administration and later Defense Minister. He held several more positions, prior to being elected Israeli Prime Minister in 2001. His military experience prepared him for prioritizing strong stances against neighboring aggressors and terrorism. On January 4, 2006, Sharon (who had prior health issues) suffered a massive stroke which led to a brain hemorrhage. The result left him in a vegetative state which lasted until his death in 2014.
