Born November 25, 1927 in Shelby to Donald F. Gates and Cleo (Arnold) Gates Mellick he spent his boyhood years in Ganges moving to Shelby in 1940. After attending Shelby Schools, he served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. Kenny worked as a pressman at Shelby Business Forms retiring in 1989. He was a member of the American Legion O'Brien Post #326, a sixty year member of the Shelby Masonic Lodge #350 F&AM and Shelby Chapter #178 RAM.
Surviving are his wife, Marianne (Vail) Gates, whom he wed February 17, 1951; his children, Daniel (Susan) Gates of Shelby, Jeanine Gates of Shelby and John (Kathy) Gates of Mills River, NC; five grandchildren; one great-grandson, his siblings, Betty (Wayne) Mellick of Rock Hill, SC, Douglas (Liz) Gates of Warsaw, IN, Dennis (Carol) Gates of Lancaster, two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Gates and Betty Vail both of Shelby; nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings, Dorothy Shaum, Donald Gates, Jr., Russell Gates, Sandra Gates and Donna Nelson.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. His sons, Dan and John, will officiate with interment in Oakland Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Richland County Veterans Burial Detail. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial expressions may be made in Kenny's memory to the Shelby Help Line Ministries and the SHS Class of 1947 Scholarship Fund.
