Maggie Irene Battle Alston, daughter of the late Wiley and Julia Battle, was born July 26, 1918, in Nash County, NC. Maggie departed this earthly life on Monday, December 30, 2013, at Hospice of Wake County, Trinity Road, Raleigh, NC.

Irene, as she was affectionately called, was the youngest of six siblings, all who preceded her in death. She spoke of all the attention and affection the older siblings gave to her and she said, "I was just spoiled."

Irene grew up and attended the Nash County Schools. She married Arthur Walter Washington Alston in 1937. After nine long years of marriage, God blessed them with a daughter, Betty Jean (deceased), and later a son, Donnie Stuart.

Irene was a good student, very competitive and athletic. She often spoke about participating in spelling bees, speaking contests and running the hundred yard dash. Irene was very active and enjoyed being involved. We believe these traits followed her down through the years. Even when her health was failing and she went to live at Phoenix Assisted Care, she was still very mobile; and when you would visit, you would sometimes find her dancing, smiling and joking with the staff. She was a very mild mannered and soft spoken person who loved her family and was loved by her family and all that knew her.

Irene was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Louisburg, NC, under the leadership of the Rev. J. T. Dunston. She was a Sunday School teacher, member of the Hickory Grove Choir and participated in numerous other auxiliaries in the church. Irene enjoyed singing, working and living for the Lord. After the passing of her husband, she moved to Raleigh, NC, to live with her daughter and granddaughters. She joined Macedonia New Life Church in Raleigh, NC, where she was an active and faithful member until her health declined. Irene retired from Wake County Council on Aging, and even on her job, she represented Christ by showing love and compassion for her clients. She said she always tried to do more than what was required of her to help them.

Irene leaves to cherish her memories: her son, Donnie Alston (Sarah) of Raleigh, NC; four granddaughters, Deborah Alston, Veronica Dunston (Albert), La'Shonda Alston all of Raleigh, NC and Tracy Alston of Mooresville, NC; four great-grand daughters; one great-grandson; five great-great- grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Rest now Mama, Grandma, Granny, because we believe all is well with your soul.
