Daughter of Samuel Ray Corbridge and Ruby Ellen Whitesides

Married Reed Mann Hatch, 19 June 1930

Married Horace Henry Barber, 1 April 1955

Obituary - Afton Hatch Barber, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother completed her earthly sojourn on September 28, 1995, at the home of a daughter in Syracuse, Utah.

She was born to Ruby Ellen Whitesides and Samuel Ray Corbridge on April 28, 1914 in Layton, Utah and spent her childhood on the family farm there. Her marriage to Reed Mann Hatch on June 19, 1930, was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. His early death left her with the responsibility of rearing three children. Her natural independent essence and determination to support her family led her into a new career as a radiology/lab technician. Later, she married Horace H. Barber on April 1, 1955 and moved to Centerville, Utah where she lived for 40 years.

Various LDS Church callings in Relief Society, Primary, and MIA have allowed her to serve, nurture, and grow. Afton's artistic interests led her to develop many talents and skills including machine embroidery, ceramics, and porcelain painting. Her many handcrafted gifts graced her family year after year and are now treasured heirlooms. A "recycler" before it was popular, she used her sewing talents to make 'old' things into new and useful items, because nothing deserved to be thrown away.

She is survived by her children: Fern H. Briseno, Oakland, Calif.; Paul C. Hatch (Lola), Layton; Barbara H. Horne (Thad), Syracuse. Also, two brothers, Thayne W. Corbridge, and McRae W. Corbridge, both of Layton.

Afton's life was enriched through family gatherings where she enjoyed happy times with her 10 grandchildren and 25 great- grandchildren. A great-grandson is currently serving an LDS mission in Malaysia.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 2, 1995 at 11:00 a.m. in the Centerville LDS chapel, 160 South 300 East. Friends may call at the Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main, Sunday, October 1 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and at the church, Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Kaysville City Cemetery.
