James Lafayette Sellers was first married to Eliza Garner. together, they had one child, Martha.

On August 1, 1856, James married Manerva Ann Curry. Together, they had eleven children, James Thomas, M. Laura, John Luther, George Henry, Margaret Ella, Willis Franklin, Mary Frances, Susan A, Elizabeth Alice Bell, Ada Tennessee, and Robert D.


James served in the Confederate army and was taken as a prisoner during the war. He was critically injured but survived the injuries. After his release he walked from Pennsylvania back to Georgia. To greet his second wife Manerva and his children.

On July 2, 1880, James married Nancy Emma Adams, who bore 10 children by JL Sellers. Emma Zola was the youngest of his twenty-one children.
