BLAKELY, Patricia

April 7, 1935 – Calgary, AB
January 4, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Patricia Anne Blakely (Quigley), 78, passed away suddenly on Saturday, January 4, 2014.

Patricia was born on April 7, 1935 in Calgary, Alberta to Robert and Emily Quigley.

Patricia spent her younger years during the war on the west coast with her mother and grandmother while her father, Lt. Col. Robert Quigley, served overseas from 1940 to 1945 with the Royal Canadian Artillery. After the war Patricia moved back to Calgary where she continued her studies and attended Central High School. Patricia was an intelligent, beautiful, and quietly independent woman who wanted to further her education. She worked and paid her own way through post-secondary school attending the University of Alberta graduating with a B.Sc. in 1957. While attending the U of A, Patricia met and married Samuel Elgin Blakely. They were together 35 years and had six children, 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Patricia was not only a mother of six children, all of whom adored her, but she was also a career woman. She worked as a laboratory technologist for many years with the Alberta Red Cross, Calgary Baker Centre, Calgary Medical Labs, and the General Hospital. After a few years of retirement Patricia returned to work as a lab-tech but this time in the oil and gas industry at C & M Engineering.

She always loved science, as it came naturally to her, in addition to having an artistic side. After retirement she developed her amazing creativity by becoming an accomplished artist using many different mediums from canvas to oil paints to pastels to charcoal. She also started painting pots, wood products, and other art projects with her daughter Kelley, forming the company PaKel Creations. They had displays at the Millarville Market for many years with the assistance of her grandchildren Danielle and Trevor.

On her own for more than 20 years, Patricia enthusiastically spent as much time as possible with her family and travelled a great deal. During her life she had the opportunity to travel to many places which she loved such as Scotland, England, France, Italy, Japan, China, Malaysia, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Maritimes, and several States too numerous to mention. She was busy with many friends at Glenmore Pool, Lakeview United Church, various volunteer jobs, and spending time lunching and dining with friends and family.

The passing of our mother, grandmother, friend has left a giant void in our hearts, but has left amazing memories of a beautiful human being. Leaving to mourn the loss of such a generous, kind, and compassionate spirit are her children Kelley (Jeff), Jim, John, Karen (Dave), Colleen (Ross); grandchildren Christopher, Kristen, Bryce, Sean, Trevor, Danielle, Jordin, Ashley, Kyle, Clara, Joel, Evan, Blake and great grandchildren, Hevyn, Avery, Katie, Jacob, Brooke. She is also survived by her sister Roberta (Ken) and brother Rick (Eve) and many nephews and nieces. Patricia was predeceased by her son Douglas in 1996.

Patricia was a bright light for all who knew her. Her children adored her for who she was – her complete essence was of beauty and kindness. She always thought of others and her main concern was for the wellbeing of her family. Though her passing will leave emptiness in our hearts and our lives we take comfort in knowing that Patricia is with God; she is not alone. All who loved her now have a guardian angel in heaven.

A Celebration of Life will held at Lakeview United Church (3023 63 Avenue S.W.) on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. A gathering of family and friends will be held following the service.
