In the 1830s William Wooten's parents, Henry and Ann, moved from Fairfield County, South Carolina to Perry County, Alabama. About 1840 they relocated to Pickens County, Alabama, where their son William was born in May 1842. William grew up in Pickens County and, at age 19, joined the Confederate States Army where he served until the surrender.
