GARSTON
Otago Witness - 31 July 1918, Page 27

There was laid to rest in the Garston Cemetery on Saturday, the 6th inst., one of our earliest settlers—a pioneer, indeed, in the fullest sense—in the person of Mrs W, D. Soper. There lives very few mothers who at the journey's end can look forward to the privilege extended to Mrs Soper—that is, to have 11 sons, heads of families, present at their burial; a twelfth being prevented from being present by the difficulties of travel. Mrs Soper was always ready to relieve trouble and sickness at a time when a doctor meant a journey of close on 100 miles and a maternity nurse was but a dream. She has been known to go to relieve distress through snow so deep that a horseman had to precede her to verify the track and ensure safety. The service at the grave was performed in a solemn and impressive manner by our Vicar, the Rev. George Coats, of St. Peter's Church, Queenstown. The sincere, sympathy of the district is being extended to the bereaved family.
