Musician. Born in England, he was significant figure in the development and popularity of ballroom dancing. He began his career as a piano player, studied music at the London College of Music and was a composer. From the 1930s through the 1970s, he was England's top dance-band leader. He had his own dance program on the BBC, made 6,500 broadcasts and was among the first music artists to appear on television. Over the coarse of his career, he sold 75 million records with translations in German, Japanese and a dozen other languages. After his death, his son Victor Silvester Jr. continued as leader of the Victor Silvester and His Silver Strings Orchestra.
