Retired Rail Employee Dies

John Hughes, 59, a retired railroad employee of Eagle Grove, died last Thursday in Mercy hospital in Fort Dodge. Mr. Hughes, who was unmarried, is survived by a sister, Mrs. Andrew McDermott of Eagle Grove, and a niece, Mrs. Margaret Widemann [Weidenman], of Des Moines.

John Hughes Died Last Thursday

John J. Hughes died Thursday night, March 4, in a Fort Dodge hospital, where he had been a patient for about a week. Funeral services were held Monday morning at Sacred Heart church, in charge of the pastor. Rev. J. L. Byrne. Interment was in Calvary cemetery.

Obituary

John James Hughes, son of James and Jane Hughes, was born on a farm near Badger, April 26, 1883. At the age of 12 years he moved with his folks to a farm near Goldfield. The death of his father left to John the care and responsibility of mother and sisters.

In 1897 the family moved to Eagle Grove, where John has resided until his death. During this time he was employed by the C. and N. W. railway and the C. and G. W. railway for 37 years of faithful service.

In December, 1938, John became ill and since that time has been unable to work. He became seriously ill two weeks ago and died in St. Joseph's Mercy hospital at Fort Dodge, Iowa, March 4.

John's father and mother and one sister, Mrs. Sabina Wesley, preceded him in death. Those surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Dina McDermott, Eagle Grove; Mrs. Margaret DeWitt, Casper, Wyo.; Mrs. Miranda Spencer, Casper, Wyo. Four nephews, James Hughes McDermott, army air corps, Sheppard Field, Texas; Roy Spencer, A. G. U. S. Navy, at sea, Wilkins Spencer, Cut Bank, Mont.; John Wesley, Hollywood, Calif. One niece, Mrs. Margaret Weidenman, Des Moines.

John was kind to all who knew him and especially to the children and young boys. He loved flowers, was always happy working with them. These memories will be kept by many.

Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart church Monday morning, and Solemn High Mass was said by Rev. J. L. Byrne. Burial was in the family lot in Calvary cemetery.
