He was a famous Australian Rules player of the late 19th century. He joined the Essendon Football Club in 1892 and helped them win the premiership in the next three seasons. At 183cm and 76kg he played mainly as a centre half forward, but had the versatility to play anywhere he was needed. In 1895 he moved to West Australia for work then returned to Melbourne and Essendon in 1899, and again played a leading role in them winning the 1901 premiership. He was deemed the "Champion of the Colony" in 1893,1894,and 1901. He retired as a player in 1906 but remained very active in horse racing. He ran a number of successful horses, one of them Amazonia running 3rd in the 1921 Melbourne Cup.
