The oldest of three children born to David Franklin and Elmira Ellen (Burkepile) Worthington, he married Emma Hazel Blanchard on 20 Dec 1915 at Charleroi.

They had three children: Robert Noll, Jr; Edna who married Russell James Snyder (died in Florida); and Claire Milton.

He had many jobs throughout his career. The earliest, per the WWI draft registration, was working as a clerk for Armor & Co. in Uniontown. The 1920 census, living in Akron, stated that he was working for a "rubber plant". By 1930 he was a mail carrier, a job which he continued per the 1940 census and the 1942 WWII draft registration. In 1939, living outside of Charleroi in Fallowfield township, he apparently had an apple orchard, since the local newspaper advertised his selling apple cider.

He and his wife were active members of the social scene as evidenced by the many times their names appeared in the local newspaper, "The Charleroi Mail."

He was also an active member of the Lutheran Church (Christ Lutheran), and is noted in 1935 as being elected to the church council per the congregation's annual meeting. He also served as Sunday School Superintendent in the 1920's.

His wife died in 1939 and his parents came to live with him and his children. His mother died in 1942 and his father in 1944. Following their deaths, on January 27, 1945 he married Twyla (nee Shannon) Beals of Charleroi. The marriage took place in the parsonage of the First Christian Church, officiated by the Rev. Byron R. Mahan of the church; their only attendant was Robert's daughter, Edna.
