Julia was born in Maine in 1839. She lived most of her youth in Hallowell, Kennebec, Maine. It is believed that she worked as a Domestic from the young age of eleven.

On October 30, 1860, Julia married Benjamin F. Grover in Farmingdale, Maine. Benjamin served his country during the Civil War and was killed at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863 in the Maine 5th Battery Mounted Artillery. He was commended for his bravery by his commanding officer, Lieutenant G. T. Stevens, who served with Benjamin at the Battle of Bull Run and the Battle at Fredericksburg. Julia was left a young widow with one very young son, Franklin. Sadly, Franklin passed away shortly after that at the age of five.

In 1869, Julia married David McGroty who was a Union soldier during the Civil War and served as a Private in the 13th New Hampshire Regiment in Company B. David was severely injured in battle and experienced ill health for the rest of his days.

Julia was tireless in her resolve to secure a medical pension for her husband David after the Civil War. Her advocacy in writing lengthy letters of support is on record. Julia suffered many hardships from her early youth, the loss of her first husband in the Civil War, and the tragedy of losing her son Franklin at such a young age. She also tended to her husband David who was a broken man in health and in spirit after the Civil War.

In 1870, as a young couple, Julia and David set up residence in Madison, New Hampshire and later returned to the Gardiner area where they raised their three sons. After David McGroty passed away in 1886, the widow Julia moved to Augusta, Maine with her teenage sons and lived at 35 Middle Street until her own death in 1888.
