ABERDEEN, S.D. - Roydon Lee Engle, 88, of Aberdeen, S.D., formerly of Traverse City, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, in the Arcadia Unit at ManorCare Health Services in Aberdeen.
Roydon and his identical twin brother, Raymond, were born Nov. 8, 1916, to Chester Horace Engle and Felicia (Detwiler) Engle in Alanson. Their childhood summers were spent on Mackinaw Island, which they fondly remembered as the best place in the world to be a kid. There they developed a love and appreciation for nature and learned how to bicycle, swim, ice skate, ski and golf. By the time they were 9 years old they began spending their winters in Traverse City.
In 1946, Roydon married Bette Nein in Detroit. They made their home in Detroit until 1955, when Roydon came back to Traverse City to work at the Peninsula Asphalt Corporation. He was a member of the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce and the Michigan Sand and Gravel Association.
Roydon spent many years on bowling leagues in Traverse City and loved to golf as well, but most of his free time was spent with the family on East Bay, where friends will remember that he served as the Commodore of the Birchwood Yacht Club for many years.
In 1994, Roy and Bette moved to South Dakota to be closer to their daughter.
Blessed to have shared his life include his daughter, Jan (John) Weaver of Aberdeen; four grandchildren, Jessica, Joshua, Janine and Jordan; and three-great-grandchildren, who hope to always honor with their own lives a man who put his family first.
Roydon was preceded in death by his wife; two sons, John and Barry; sister, Ardis Carpenter; and his brother, Raymond.
A memorial service on East Bay will be planned this summer in Traverse City.
The family was served by Spitzer Funeral Home, Aberdeen, S.D.
