Founder of Hartsville, SC. Son of James Hart and Sarah Edwards. Had a brother, James Arthur Hart. Married Hannah Lide in August 1815 (her father is Major Robert Lide, Rev. War Hero, buried in same cemetery) Hart acquired most of what is now Hartsville beginning in 1817 and continuing until the late 1830's. He established the first Post Office (aptly named Hartsville) in 1838, inside his mercantile store (the first store). He also built the first schoolhouse in the area. However, due to a financial panic of the late 1830's, he lost most of what he had, and his spirit crushed, he died in 1842. Some of his descendants (and others) continued to develop the area into what it is today.
