Samuel was the youngest of three children born to Samuel and Helen (Edwards) Boatright. He married Stacey Ellen Kibler in 1866 and they had four children: John Sherman, Donnell Alexander, Anna Melissa and Bertha L.

Served in Company "D" 98th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War.
