Born in Nodaway county and lived there until her marriage and moving to Andrew county in 1927. She lived with her Aunt Kate Gregory during her high school years in order to graduate from Savannah High School. Then she attended the Maryville Normal School and the University of Missouri for further education while teaching several rural schools in Nodaway county before her marriage.
Mrs. Scowden was a member of the United Methodist Church, Savannah, where she had served as Sunday School superintendent and teacher, and was a charter member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service. She was also a 50 year member of Chapter EJ of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and past president.
