Elijah was the son of John Henry Tillman and Sarah Mercer. He was the great-grandson of Joshua Belitha Tilghman who was a staff officer of General George Washington.
He was commissioned a 2nd. Lt., Company H, 50th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA. He was severely wounded in 1863 at the battle of Chancellorsville. He resigned his commission on April 8, 1863 due to his wounds. He returned home and joined 11th Regiment Georgia State Guard cavalry which was mustered Aug.4, 1863. He had to furnish his own horse. The tour of duty was for 6 month and the area of action was the SW quarter of the state. He was commissioned Captain. He was also the coroner at the time of Colquitt County’s founding. After the Civil War, he served as a judge and was active in Confederate causes.

He married Mary Goff 9/27/1851. They had 7 children. Mary Magdolina, Sarah, Henry, James, Phoebe, Elijah, and Jeremiah.
