Lyla I. Petersen, age 89, of Cinosam Road, Brainerd, passed into death July 26, 2008, at 6:30 a.m.
She is survived by one brother, Kenny (Maxine) Petersen of Nisswa, and one sister, Minnie (Harland, deceased) Renn; six nephews, Henry (Terry) Paetzel of Lakeshore (Mpls), Doug (Maria) Petersen of Drayton, N.D., Greg Petersen of Nisswa, Ernie (Tracey) Renn of Brainerd, Mark Petersen of Brainerd, Wayne Renn of Brainerd; 10 great-nieces and nephews; and nine great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Dan and Minnie Petersen; two infants, George Petersen and John Petersen; and two sisters, Alice Petersen and Gladys Petersen.
Lyla was a musician (vocals, fiddle, mandolin, banjo and guitar) and played music at area clubs with The Petersen Sisters' Band from 1947-1956. She worked at S & L Store in the shoe department for 39 and-a-half years in Brainerd, and later at Nystrom Drug for 10 years. She was a member of the Cinosam Club, and active with handmade crafts and Stampin' Up parties. She was well known for her fish mobiles and making handmade greeting cards since she was 9 years old. Music was her passion and she was a guest singer many times appearing at The Bridge Tavern with the Austead family band, Mark Petersen and the Wayne Renn Band. She was also a guest singer at the 2007 Crow Wing County Fair.
Always up for a game of cards or laughs, Auntie Lyla loved being with her nephews and their children. She documented her memories on 8 mm film from 1955 to 1985, and then later on video. She was always ready for a night out and was singing on stage until only a few months before her death. The Petersen and Renn families celebrated most birthdays and Christmases at her house every year. Her Christmas cookies and homemade fudge were a family favorite. She was also famous for her homemade noodles and favorite cake recipe dubbed "family cake". Enough could never be said about this outstanding person.
The funeral will be held at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd, Minn. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, with the funeral following at 11 a.m. Luncheon will be held at the Eagles Club after the burial at Evergreen Cemetery.
