BOWERS, Gerald William, 78, of Montpelier, Va., departed this physical life to the other side to enter his eternal home on January 5, 2014. He was born to the late Thomas Cecil Bowers and Elena O. Herring, February 9, 1935, in Spartanburg, S.C. He married Doris Ruth Penfield in 1953 and they lived together in Columbia, S.C. before relocating to Richmond, Va. in 1961. Mr. Bowers was a retired supervisor for C & P Telephone Company. He enjoyed the challenges of electronics and had continued to be involved in technology. He was a notary and a member of GWRRA Association. He made many trips on his Gold Wing motorcycle including trips to Daytona, Fla. He was a member of Oakwood Memorial Baptist Church where he served as trustee, deacon, chairman of the Child Care Committee and Stewardship chairman. He was also active with Western Hanover Church. Once retired, he kept busy by maintaining his property and adding improvements. He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, Patrick H. Bowers, his brother, Robert Kendrick; his son, Gerald Cecil Bowers and his son's wife, Alice R. Smith. He is survived by his wife, Doris P. Bowers; his children, Cherie L. Bowers, Teresa L. Bowers and Celeste B. Joyce; his sister, Gayle K. Neal; his sister-in-law, Ottilie K. Bowers; and grandchildren, Jason, Nancy, Julia, Kris, Eric, Rachel, Jessica, Matt and Haley. Viewings will be held 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 9, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, January 10, 2014, at Western Hanover Church, 16050 Mountain Rd., Montpelier, Va. 23192 and interment will be held following the service at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
