He bought a quarter section of land in Lawrence County, MO, just north of Stotts City, where their youngest son, Daniel, was born in 1857. Daniel and Elmina's daughter Prusha was married to Philip Hill in Lawrence County, MO in 1857, so they may have arrived prior to that.
Dr. Beck was killed in the doorway of his home on 30 September 1864, by rebel raiders (Confederate army Bushwhackers), as was his son, Linzey. The home was also burned.
Daniel Beck is said to have served in the Fifteenth Missouri Cavalry, "which was organized April 1 1863, as the Second Provisional Regiment, at Mount Vernon. On May 19, 1863, it was given the title Seventh Provisional Regiment, and then had 629 men. In June 1864, orders were received to organize as a United States Volunteer Command, the muster to date from November 1863, and as a result, the renowned command known as the Fifteenth Missour Volunteer Cavalry was organized by Col. John D. Allen at Springfield, August 27, 1864, and mustered in by Capt. John G. Quinn. There were 12 companies. Daniel Beck was believed to have been in Company C, under command of Green C. Stotts, Josiah P. Boyd and Charles C. Brown. He was said to be under direct command of Captain Stotts.
