Ode met Velie in a peach orchard where she was working. Mr. J Henry Fraiser had a thriving orchard and employed many hands. It is thought Ode was visiting Aunt Sis Renfroe's family who lived near the orchard located 3 miles southeast of Dallas Douglasville Rd. He had accompanied Cleve and John to the orchard where he met his future bride. Among the items Velie purchased with her earnings were an oak dresser and two center tables.
Both Ode and Velie were active in school activities especially in the Cochran School District. He helped in the building of the new school house about 1918-19. He was called on to auction off the boxes filled with goodies and attractively decorated at the social functions for the purpose of raising money for school needs. Ode and Velie lived in 5 different counties after they married, 1st in Campbell Co near his parents home place, then to a place in Powder Springs from there to Paulding Co on land adjoining Abe Harris farm in the Cochran School Community was a move to Hiram and back once or twice during the years 1910-24. In the mealtime Ode tried out other lines of work other than farming such as working in the Livery stable business with Joe Harshbarger, operating a cafe under the barber Shop in Hiram, and operating a dry goods store for a short time but his main vocation was farming.
In 1924 the family moved to Athens so Lemma could attend the University of GA and Zenobia could enter high school. he expected to get work there not realizing that in a college town there would be more people seeking work than there were jobs available. he landed a position on a farm of Mr. Liddell near Watkinsville and remained there until spring 1927 when they moved back on his farm. The main six room house burned to ashes Nov. 1924. At that time Ode barely escaped the fire in the early morning hours being awakened by the barking of his dog Ring. Their final move was into a new house built in 1930 in Hiram on an old gin site in Corner of Moon St. then now Main Street and Marietta St.
Ode was accommodating person and that was a factor in his death. He was hauling a cow in his pickup truck to Atlanta for Mr. Palmer when a Mr. Landers of Powder Springs hit his truck in passing causing the truck to turn over and crushed Ode's head resulting in his death on Monday 8-8-1932.
